Prescriptions & Referrals

Requests without consultation

Doctors get many requests from patients for assistance, and for paperwork to be completed. These can include contacting specialists for an urgent appointment, advice for a particular patient’s needs, ringing or writing to get special approval for certain prescriptions, organising a hospital bed or other assistance with local community carers, medical certificates, travel assistance forms, various Centrelink forms, travel insurance claim forms etc. as well as time to liaise with the practice nurse. Because of this most requests require an  appointment to be booked with the doctor, so time can be allocated to fulfil your request.

Non Appointment Patient Requests/Referrals
A referral is not just a quick note on a pad. The doctor needs to write to the specialist and include copies of relevant pathology and investigations. A patient needs to be seen by their GP in order to be referred to a specialist and receive the Medicare rebate. Doctors are not permitted by law to back date specialist referrals, so please ensure that you have a current referral before seeing your specialist.

Repeat Prescriptions
Prescriptions are normally written with the maximum number of allowable repeats for the patient’s convenience. A patient on medication needs to be reviewed regularly by the Doctor. For this reason, repeat prescriptions are not usually available over the phone unless prior arrangements have been made with the Doctor. Scripts cannot be issued to persons who have not been seen by a doctor at this practice.

Restricted scripts
Please be advised, doctors at Rehoboth Tura Beach Medical Centre may refer requests for restricted drugs to the Government Prescription Shopping Information Service The Doctors will be provided with: -
  • Total number of doctors who have prescribed to the identified patient.
  • Total number of PBS medications supplied.
  • List of all PBS medicines supplied, including
    •  Item name/ strength/ quantity obtained.
Our doctors maintain the right to refuse to prescribe restricted medications to new or visiting patients without proper authority.
